This vigorous native shrub features attractive bi-pinnate green foliage on spreading, sturdy branches ; produces interesting pincushion lilac flowers in spring to summer; a handsome textural addition to shrub borders

Ornamental Features

Xanti Mimosa features dainty spikes of lilac purple pincushion flowers with white tips along the branches from mid spring to late summer. It has attractive bluish-green evergreen foliage which emerges light green in spring. The small glossy oval bipinnately compound leaves are highly ornamental and remain bluish-green throughout the winter. The smooth dark gray bark and coppery-bronze branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape.

Landscape Attributes

Xanti Mimosa is a multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.

This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. It is a good choice for attracting bees and butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. Gardeners should be aware of the following characteristic(s) that may warrant special consideration;

  • Spreading
  • Invasive
  • Insects

Xanti Mimosa is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Rock/Alpine Gardens
  • General Garden Use
  • Groundcover

Planting & Growing

Xanti Mimosa will grow to be about 8 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 12 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years.

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for xeriscaping or the moisture-conserving landscape. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This species is not originally from North America, and parts of it are known to be toxic to humans and animals, so care should be exercised in planting it around children and pets.
