Description:

A wonderful, upright shrub, with clusters of showy white lacecap flowers in late winter followed by blue-black fruit in summer; its uniform and dense growth habit makes a great specimen or hedge with a minimum of pruning; disease resistant

Ornamental Features

Withlacoochie® Viburnum is blanketed in stunning clusters of lightly-scented white tubular flowers with buttery yellow throats held atop the branches from mid winter to early spring. The black fruits are held in abundance in spectacular clusters in early summer. It has dark green evergreen foliage. The small glossy oval leaves remain dark green throughout the winter. The smooth gray bark and burgundy branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape.

Landscape Attributes

Withlacoochie® Viburnum is a dense multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. It is a good choice for attracting birds and butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Withlacoochie® Viburnum is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Mass Planting
  • Hedges/Screening
  • General Garden Use

Planting & Growing

Withlacoochie® Viburnum will grow to be about 12 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more.

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under average home landscape conditions. This plant should not require much in the way of fertilizing once established, although it may appreciate a shot of general-purpose fertilizer from time to time early in the growing season. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selection of a native North American species.
