Description:

This alpine selection forms a loose mat of pointed evergreen foliage arranged in rosettes resembling sempervivum; masses of pink to mauve flowers with yellow centers rise above on red stems; a perfect addition to the garden or rockery

Ornamental Features

Sempervivum-leaved Rock Jasmine has masses of beautiful clusters of pink star-shaped flowers with yellow eyes and fuchsia centers rising above the foliage from early to late spring, which are most effective when planted in groupings. Its attractive pointy leaves remain green in color throughout the season. The brick red stems can be quite attractive.

Landscape Attributes

Sempervivum-leaved Rock Jasmine is an herbaceous perennial with tall flower stalks held atop a low mound of foliage. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Sempervivum-leaved Rock Jasmine is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Mass Planting
  • Rock/Alpine Gardens
  • General Garden Use
  • Groundcover

Planting & Growing

Sempervivum-leaved Rock Jasmine will grow to be only 3 inches tall at maturity extending to 4 inches tall with the flowers, with a spread of 12 inches. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 5 years. As an herbaceous perennial, this plant will usually die back to the crown each winter, and will regrow from the base each spring. Be careful not to disturb the crown in late winter when it may not be readily seen!

This plant does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in sandy soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This species is not originally from North America.
