Description:

An upright semi-deciduous tree that will form a shade canopy when mature; some leaves will color and fall, some will remain through winter; flowers are subtle but interesting; prefers constantly moist soil and partial shade; an excellent landscape accent

Ornamental Features

Variegated Sycoparrotia is clothed in stunning nodding red frilly flowers with brown bracts along the branches from late winter to early spring, which emerge from distinctive pink flower buds. It has attractive creamy white-variegated dark green foliage with hints of light green. The glossy pointy leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding yellow in the fall.

Landscape Attributes

Variegated Sycoparrotia is a deciduous tree with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This tree will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Variegated Sycoparrotia is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Shade

Planting & Growing

Variegated Sycoparrotia will grow to be about 15 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 15 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid.
