Description:

This redwood is a dwarf, low growing variety that is multi-stemmed and broad; interesting red-brown, gnarled bark and aromatic glossy green foliage make this a beautiful accent for the garden or massed in borders

Ornamental Features

Prostrata Coast Redwood is a dwarf conifer which is primarily valued in the landscape or garden for its ornamental upright and spreading habit of growth. It has dark green evergreen foliage. The fragrant sprays of foliage remain dark green throughout the winter. The furrowed brick red bark is extremely showy and adds significant winter interest.

Landscape Attributes

Prostrata Coast Redwood is a multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.

This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and can be pruned at anytime. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Prostrata Coast Redwood is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Mass Planting
  • General Garden Use

Planting & Growing

Prostrata Coast Redwood will grow to be about 5 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live to a ripe old age of 200 years or more; think of this as a heritage shrub for future generations!

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type, but has a definite preference for acidic soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This is a selection of a native North American species.
